Ukraine earlier rejected Putin’s announcement of a 36-hour ceasefire tomorrow and Saturday, saying there would be no ceasefire until Moscow withdraws its forces from the occupied territories.
THE UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres would welcome any truce in Ukraine on the occasion of the Orthodox Christmas holiday, “knowing that such a truce would not replace a just peace, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law,” a spokesman said today.
Ukraine earlier rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a 36-hour ceasefire tomorrow and Saturday, saying there would be no ceasefire until Moscow withdraws its forces from the occupied territories.
Guterres has meanwhile disbanded the mission to find evidence of the attack on the Ukrainian town of Olenivka last July, in which Ukrainian prisoners were killed by pro-Russian separatists. The reason, according to his spokesman, was that the mission could not be deployed at that location.
Both Russia and Ukraine have called for an investigation into the attack. Guterres announced the creation of the mission in August.
