The lawsuit was filed in a Washington court against Mr. Trump on behalf of the family of Brian Siknik, who died aged 42 after suffering a series of strokes on January 7.

A medical examiner has ruled that the police officer was not injured in the attack on the Capitol, which was intended to prevent members of the US Congress from ratifying the result of the November 2020 presidential election, which Mr Trump lost. He ruled that Brian Siknik’s death was due to natural causes. However, he acknowledged that the riots “played a role” in the development of his condition.

Donald Trump “deliberately incited the crowd and directed and encouraged a mob to attack the Capitol,” Officer Siknik’s family says in the lawsuit.

“The ensuing violence, injuries and violence (…), including the injuries sustained by Officer Siknik and his subsequent death, were a natural and consequential consequence of Defendant Trump’s words and actions,” the lawsuit alleges.

A spokeswoman for the former president was not available for comment Thursday night.

In addition to the “wrongful death” of the officer, the lawsuit accuses Donald Trump of violating the rights of Brian Siknik and also of assault and dereliction of duty.

The family is seeking $10 million in damages.

The lawsuit also names two persons who were involved in the incidents.

The House Special Investigations Committee, which has been conducting a months-long investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack, which has shocked the US and internationally, asked in December for Mr Trump to be charged with “sedition” and “obstruction”. » of justice.

This is the first time in US history that Congress has submitted a request to the Department of Justice to prosecute a former president of the country.
