A new period of crisis is entering Afghanistanas warned by the UN diplomatic mission in the country due to the ban imposed by the – de facto – Taliban government on the exclusion of women from university education a few weeks ago, but also from the ban on their work in humanitarian services assistance, after invoking issues related to the Islamic headscarf (hijab).

Today, his Aid Mission UN in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced that the bans will affect all Afghans.

Several humanitarian organizations and agencies, including the UN, have suspended aid programs in protest at recent decisions by Taliban.

The UN’s high-ranking envoy Markus Potzel recently met with the Taliban’s minister of higher education Neda Mohammad Nadeemcalling for the bans to be lifted immediately.

Nadeem is considered one of the people in the inner circle of the Taliban’s supreme leader, who has publicly defended the ban on women’s participation in university education.

The Taliban have greatly restricted women’s rights since they took power in Afghanistan in August 2021, and have refused to show flexibility despite international outcry. Young girls, as well as women, are now largely excluded from public life.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is seen as volatile, following the return of the Taliban to power last year and the withdrawal of international military forces, while the economy is collapsing.
