Ukraine: Unilateral ceasefire is over – Moscow did not respect it, says Zelensky

by

“The world was able to see once again tonight how false are all the words spoken even at the highest level in Moscow,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his videotaped nightly message.

A 36-hour unilateral ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin has ended without a real cessation of hostilities, with Ukrainians in some areas celebrating Christmas in underground shelters.

“The world was able to see once again tonight how false are all the words spoken even at the highest level in Moscow,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his videotaped nightly message.

“They talked about an alleged truce (…) but the reality is that Russian shells continued to hit Bakhmut and other Ukrainian positions,” he added, repeating that the only solution is “to expel the Russian invaders from Ukrainian lands.”

The truce was due to expire at midnight Moscow time (23.00 Greek time) and Ukraine accuses the Russian army of not respecting it. Russia in turn accuses the Ukrainians of obstructing its implementation, forcing Russian soldiers to return fire.
