Legendary British guitarist Jeff Beck, who rose to fame in the 1960s with the rock band The Yardbirds, has died aged 78 of meningitis, his family announced Wednesday night.
“On behalf of the family, it is with deep sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he passed away peacefully yesterday,” according to a statement posted on the musician’s official website.

In the 1960s and 1970s he founded and fronted the hard rock band The Jeff Beck Group, along with singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ron Wood, before pursuing a long solo career.
“No one played guitar like Jeff,” Kiss’s Gene Simmons tweeted.
Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi also paid tribute to the “incredible, iconic, genius guitarist”, adding “there will never be another Jeff Beck”.
Singer Paul Young stressed for his part that he was “shocked” when he learned the news of “the sudden and tragic death of legendary guitarist Jeff Beck”.
