Lula: The Bolsonarians who stormed the presidential palace had help from the inside

“I am convinced that the door to the Planalto Palace was opened for people to enter, because no door was broken,” the center-left president said during a meeting with reporters.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said today he is convinced that protesters who stormed the presidential palace in Brasilia on Sunday benefited from inside help and announced a “deep” reassessment of presidential palace staff.

“I am convinced that the door to the Planalto Palace was opened for people to enter, because no door was broken,” the center-left president said during a meeting with reporters.

“That means someone facilitated their entry here,” he insisted.

“How can I have someone at my office door who could shoot me?” Lula wondered.

Several thousand supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, who do not accept his electoral defeat by Lula in last October’s election, sowed chaos in the capital on Sunday, storming the Presidential Palace, the Supreme Court and Congress.

They destroyed everything in their path, including works of art, in a setting reminiscent in many ways of the invasion of the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021 by supporters of then-President Donald Trump.

More than 2,000 people have been arrested since the riots and 1,159 of them have been jailed, according to the latest tally by Brazilian authorities.

Authorities are investigating who organized the attack and how the protesters were financed.

“We will investigate calmly to understand what really happened,” Lula, 77, said, announcing a “deep” reassessment of the presidential palace staff.

“The truth is that the palace was full of bolsonarians, of military men and we want to see if we can fix (the situation) by placing career civil servants, preferably civilians or those who were there before or who were suspended,” he said.
