The US Navy’s Fifth Fleet announced on Wednesday that two of its vessels had seized a shipment of weapons carrying an illegal flagless fishing vessel during a search of the northern part of the Arabian Sea (Indian Ocean).
The vessel carried about 1,400 AK-47 assault rifles and 226,600 rounds of ammunition, the U.S. Navy said in a press release.
“The flagless ship was estimated to have originated in Iran and was passing through international waters along a route that has historically been used to smuggle weapons to the Houthis in Yemen,” he added.
The direct or indirect supply, sale or transfer of weapons to the Yemeni Shiite rebel movement violates both UN Security Council resolutions and US sanctions.
The five crew members of the boat, who said they were Yemenis, will be handed over to the Yemeni authorities, according to the Fifth Fleet, which said it sank the fishing boat after it was removed from its crew and its illegal cargo.
The USS Monterey (CG 61) missile cruiser seized dozens of Russian-made anti-tank missiles, thousands of Chinese-made 56 rifles, hundreds of PKM machine guns, sniper rifles and grenade launchers. May.
