US Senator and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez continues to express his opposition to the proposed sale of new F-16 aircraft to Turkey by the Biden administration.
According to Politico, Menendez criticizes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for continuing to “undermine international law and exhibit disturbing and destabilizing behavior against neighboring NATO allies” while supporting the sale of F-35s to Greece.
Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas also opposes the sale of new F-16s to Turkey, saying Turkey could potentially receive American weapons to conduct military operations against a NATO ally.
“This sale should not go forward and I will oppose any plan brought before Congress,” declared Mr. Pope.
The remarks come as the US administration prepares to seek congressional approval for a $20 billion sale of 40 new F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, along with a separate sale of next-generation F-35 fighter jets to Greece.
At the same time, the equipment package in Turkey will also include more than 900 air-to-air missiles and 800 bombs.
