Keenan Anderson, 31, the cousin of one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, died hours after being tasered by a police officer

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called for the suspension of police officers involved in the death of a fellow co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement while an investigation into his brutal arrest is conducted.

“Whatever the outcome” of the investigation, Ms. Bass emphasized, “the need for urgent change is clear. We need to reduce the use of force above all else, and I have absolutely zero tolerance (for the use of) excessive force,” added the mayor, a Democrat and African-American.

Keenan Anderson, 31, the cousin of one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, died hours after being tasered by a police officer during his arrest, Los Angeles authorities said.

The incident, which unfolded on Jan. 3, came to light this week as police on Wednesday released video of the arrest, captured by body cameras worn by the officers who arrested him.

The video clearly shows Keenan Anderson, visibly upset, during his arrest after a simple traffic accident in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. The police officers use force to control him, knock him down, give him repeated electric shocks with tasers to stop him from “resisting”.

In the video, Keenan Anderson can be heard screaming “help!”, “they’re trying to kill me!” or even “trying to make me the new George Floyd!”, as a police officer places his elbow on his torso and neck.

Keenan Anderson, who was taken to a hospital after his arrest, died of cardiac arrest.

“He was murdered by the police,” claimed Patrice Kallors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, on Instagram.

Keenan Anderson—a teacher who lived in Washington, D.C., was just visiting Los Angeles—was her cousin.

Keenan Anderson’s death brings to three the number of police-involved deaths in Los Angeles since 2023, according to US media.
