The execution of the British-Iranian “spy” Akbari – who confessed under torture – provoked a strong reaction from Britain and Amnesty International

Tehran proceeded with the execution by hanging of the British-Iranian Alireza Akbari, after he was sentenced to death on charges of spying for Britain.

The news was reported by the Iranian media without, however, specifying when and how.

“Alireza Akbari, who was sentenced to death on charges of corruption on the ground and extensive actions against the internal and external security of the country by spying for the intelligence services of the British government…has been executed,” Mizan news agency reported on Twitter.

A video of Akbari’s last moments, dated 13/01, was also released on twitter.

A few hours earlier, BBC Persian broadcast recorded statements of Akbari in which he said that he confessed after being tortured. “With over 3,500 hours of torture, hallucinogenic substances and methods of physical and psychological pressure, they rendered me insensible. They drove me to the brink of insanity…and forced me to make false confessions at gunpoint and death threats,” reads the excerpt.

Akbari’s execution provoked a strong reaction from Britain and Amnesty International.

“This morning’s execution by Iranian authorities of British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari demonstrates once again their heinous attack on the right to life,” Amnesty International said, calling on the British government to “fully investigate” allegations of Akbari’s torture. .
