Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in central Tel Aviv against the policies of the ruling coalition, which brings together right-wing, far-right and Jewish ultra-Orthodox parties, fearing an anti-democratic drift.
The protesters responded to a call by an anti-corruption organization with the slogan “To Save Democracy” and to prevent “the overthrow of the political regime” in Israel that has been in place since its founding in 1948.

Center, left-wing parties and the Hadash-Taal coalition of Arab parties called on Israelis to demonstrate, mainly against the judicial reform introduced on January 4 by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, who is being prosecuted on a series of corruption charges.
They are also demanding the resignation of the prime minister because of his involvement in corruption cases.

Banners held by protesters in Habima Square with slogans in Hebrew and Arabic show the wide range of demands: “Time to topple the dictator,” “Government of Shame,” “No Democracy with Occupation,” “Bibi he doesn’t want democracy, we don’t want fascists in the Knesset’, ‘Iran is here’, ‘Love thy Neighbor as Thyself’.
The initiative for the demonstration belongs to the Black Flag Movement which had organized the long campaign to impeach Netanyahu from July 2020 to June 2021 demanding Netanyahu’s resignation due to the corruption scandals in which he is involved.
A line of speakers was expected on the stage of Habima square. Among them is former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, who called on Friday via Twitter “the entire Israeli people, left and right, to demonstrate for the preservation of Israeli democracy.” “It’s a first-rate civic duty.”
