A military spokesman said the attack on the operation was likely launched by ADF insurgents
At least five people were killed and 15 wounded in a bomb attack allegedly carried out by Islamist militants during a Sunday service at a Protestant church in the town of Kasidi in North Kivu in eastern DR Congo, on the border with Uganda, the army said.
A military spokesman said the attack on the facility was likely carried out by rebels from the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces), an organization that was founded in Uganda but has been active mainly in DR Congo for 25 years and has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State jihadist group. (IK).
“Despite the security measures that were in place, early indications are that the ADF is behind this bombing,” Anthony Mwalusai told Reuters by telephone.
The government also condemned, in a tweet from the Ministry of Communications, “the bombing apparently carried out by ADF terrorists”.
The ADF has so far not claimed responsibility for the bombing.
“I just came back from the scene where I saw the bodies of children on the ground,” town resident Alain Kitsa told Reuters.
This will be the first time the ADF has targeted Kasidi since the group stepped up attacks in the area in 2014, local official Charles Omeonga told Reuters, noting that the estimated death toll was at least 10.
