In an emergency statement to the House of Commons on Monday afternoon, the UK Defense Secretary confirmed the deployment of Challenger tanks to Ukraine.

The decision was announced over the weekend and as Ben Wallace told British MPs, it concerns the dispatch of 14 tanks.

The new package of military aid to Ukrainian forces also includes escort vehicles and 30 AS90-type firearms. The minister spoke of the most important combat package so far to accelerate the Ukrainian success.

In his statement, Mr. Wallace further emphasized that Russia “has failed to bend the will of the Ukrainian people” and has also “managed to lose significant numbers of generals and commanders.”

He went on to say that “Ukraine’s allies should step up collective efforts to maintain diplomatic, economic and military pressure” against President Putin.

He noted that contrary to Putin’s hope, “instead of fragmenting, the West is accelerating efforts” to support Ukraine, which continues to fight.

The UK becomes the first Western country to supply the Ukrainians with main battle tanks to be used in training Ukrainian soldiers.
