The Russian Navy’s newest nuclear-powered submarine capable of launching nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, the General Chuvorov, is on its way to a temporary Northern Fleet base in the Arctic, Russian state news agency TASS reported Tuesday, citing a source close to the Defense Ministry. of Russia.

The strategic submarine officially joined the Russian fleet at the end of 2022, by the decision of President Vladimir Putin. He will join the Pacific Fleet. He will be at his new headquarters, the Rebachi submarine base on the Kamchatka Peninsula, in the summer.

This is the sixth Borei-class vessel—smaller and more difficult-to-detect submarines—to be acquired by the Russian Navy. It is capable of launching up to 16 Bulava ballistic missiles, each of which can carry more than one nuclear warhead.
