“He had a problem with his molars and instead of treating them, they took them out so he wouldn’t make a fuss,” his lawyer says.
Convicted drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is complaining about the “cruel and unjust” conditions in a maximum security US prison he is in and is begging authorities in Mexico to take him home.
The notorious drug trafficker, who was extradited to the US in 2017 and is now locked up in a super-maximum security federal prison in Colorado, is pleading with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to pull the strings and bring him back home.
Guzmán’s lawyer said things are so bad that when his client had a toothache, prison officials simply clenched his teeth.
“He doesn’t see the sun, the food is of very poor quality, there is no health care,” lawyer Jose Refugio Rodriguez told reporters. “He had a problem with his molars and instead of treating them, they took them out so he wouldn’t fuss,” Rodriguez said.
Guzmán, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2019, is now being held in solitary confinement and is only allowed 6 phone calls from March 2022, his lawyer said, calling the restrictions “physical torture” for the one-time Sinaloa cartel boss.
