Protest in southern Peru leaves at least 1 dead, and caravans arrive in Lima

On the same day that hundreds of Peruvians arrived in Lima for an act against the government of Dina Boluarte, new clashes in the south of the country between security forces and supporters of former leader Pedro Castillo left at least one dead and one injured this Wednesday. fair (18).

The victim is an approximately 35-year-old woman who arrived at the hospital with no vital signs – her identity has not been revealed. In total, at least 50 people have already died during acts against the government in Peru, a country plunged into social upheaval since the fall of Castillo last month.

The clashes took place in Macusani, about 250 km from Puno, the current epicenter of the protests. Shortly after the death, a crowd set fire to the headquarters of the Judiciary and a police station in the city – police officers working at the site had to be rescued using a helicopter.

Protests against Boluarte resumed after a two-week truce over the holiday season. Last Sunday (15), authorities decided to extend the state of emergency in four provinces and three regions of the country, including the capital, Lima, after demonstrations gained strength.

The decree is valid for 30 days and also applies to the regions of Cusco and Puno and the provinces of Callao, Andahuaylas, Tambopata and Tahuamanu. The state of emergency allows, among other things, the Army to join the police in monitoring the protests.
