About 20 coffins and 80 urns ended up in a ravine
Due to the ongoing bad weather, in the town of Sant’Agata dei Gotti in Lower Italy, in the wider region of Naples, part of the local cemetery collapsed today. The main cause of the incident, it seems, is the increase in the water level in a tributary located right next to the cemetery.
About 20 coffins and 80 urns ended up in a ravine. Tomorrow Friday, weather permitting, their re-positioning in the cemetery will begin.
“We respect the pain of the relatives of the dead, but we ask for understanding and the maximum possible cooperation from everyone, without unfairly assigning blame,” said the mayor of Sant’Agata dei Gotti, Salvatore Riccio.
Many of the relatives of the dead have asked for judicial intervention in order to ascertain whether there are responsibilities of the local government, since residents had long pointed out the problems in the area of the cemetery.
