The protesters chanted: “What do we want? Climate justice. When do we want it? Now’ and ‘Fossil fuels must be phased out’ while Thunberg held a placard reading ‘Keep them in the ground’.
Greta Thunberg and others approximately 30 activists defied the sub-zero temperatures today by protesting and doing call for climate justice as the World Economic Forum completes his work in Davos.
The protesters chanted: “What do we want? Climate justice. When do we want it? Now’ and ‘Fossil fuels must be phased out’ while Thunberg held a placard reading ‘Keep them in the ground’.
Thunberg, who was brought in by police in Germany earlier this week during a protest against an expansion of a coal mine, was in Davos after a round-table discussion with the head of the International Energy Agency on Thursday.
The 20-year-old Swedish activist insisted on its position against the development of new oil fields, gas and coal at the event, on the sidelines of the conference.
The executive director of IEA Fatih Birol, whose agency makes policy recommendations, said new investments in oil-rich areas would take years to become operational. They will be too late to alleviate energy shortages, but they will contribute to the climate crisis. He praised Thunberg’s efforts and thanked her for the invitation to speak to activists.
At today’s rally Vanessa Nakate from Uganda, who also took part in the discussion with Birol, said leaders should listen to the science and stop all investment in coal, oil and gas.
“The IEA has made it very clear that we cannot have any new investment in fossil fuels if we are to live with global warming [αύξησης της παγκόσμιας υπερθέρμανσης] below 1.5 degrees Celsius,” he told the crowd.
Thunberg and her fellow activists presented a “cease and desist” warning to oil and gas company executives, which they waved during today’s protest in Davos.
The oil and gas industry, accused by campaigners of monopolizing the climate change debate in the Swiss ski resort, has said it must be part of the energy transition as fossil fuels will continue to play an important role in the energy mix as long as the world will shift to a low carbon economy.
In 2019, the then 16-year-old Thunberg took part in the main conference of the Davos Forum telling the leaders her famous line “our house is on fire”. He returned to Davos the following year.
