“Our government, with the new measures it has just adopted, has decided to increase the level of vigilance against the new coronavirus pandemic,” Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said on Thursday.
Speranza explained that in addition to the other measures, the one that he called a new protection shield for the elderly in nursing homes will be offered. “Only relatives and friends who have completed their vaccination cycle – having received the booster dose – will be able to visit them or, if they have taken two doses, they will need a negative test,” he explained.
“With the new measures we have adopted, we provide additional protection to the citizens but also to the health system of the country. “Of course, the vaccine remains the main weapon we have at our disposal,” Speranza added.
The Omicron variant is now detected in 28% of cases. But within two weeks, the country’s Supreme Institute of Health warns, its rate is expected to double.
The Minister of Health asked his compatriots for “the utmost care and great wisdom, especially during the Christmas and New Year holidays”.
