The Los Angeles gunman who opened fire late Saturday (local time) in Monterey Park, east of Los Angeles, after Chinese New Year events that drew thousands and left 10 people, five men and five women to lose their lives and 10 to be injured.

Some of the injured are hospitalized in critical condition.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna described the suspect as “Asian” and believed to be between 30 and 50 years old.

“Everything is on the table … We don’t know if this is a hate crime under the law,” Robert Luna said.

“We are here to tell you that we are using every means to apprehend this suspect in one of the most heinous cases in the county. Local state and federal law enforcement agencies are working together to better serve the residents here in Los Angeles County and apprehend this offender,” he said.

At the same time, the sheriff referred to another incident that occurred a few minutes after the attack and which was probably related to the massacre.

“We believe there may be an incident that may be related…where an Asian male suspect entered a dance hall…with a firearm and some individuals wrestled with him to get the gun away from him. This person escaped… Some witnesses describe the presence of a white truck in the area, we don’t know if… it is connected,” he said, referring to an incident that occurred in the neighboring Alhambra district about 17 minutes after the carnage.

The shootings occurred at 10:22 p.m. (local time) at a club on Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park.

Monterey Park is a city of approximately 60,000 with a large Asian population located approximately 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
