His death stirred up Tunisia and was a catalyst for the so-called Arab Spring in North Africa and the Middle East.
A Tunisian man died on Sunday after setting himself on fire, local residents and media reported, recalling the 2010 self-immolation that sparked the first of a series of uprisings in the region dubbed the Arab Spring.
In December 2010, street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest at police harassment.
His death stirred up Tunisia and was a catalyst for the so-called Arab Spring in North Africa and the Middle East.
A video circulating on social networking sites shows a man setting himself on fire last Saturday night in Nabeel province (northeast).
The man died after being taken to hospital, Mosaïque FM radio station reported, citing an unnamed provincial official.
The reason for the gap is not clear. The father of three was facing financial difficulties and family problems, according to Mosaic. There were also issues at work and his suicide was an act of protest, according to residents.
So far, the authorities have made no comment.
The suicide was added to a series of extreme forms of protest by desperate Tunisians. Several set themselves on fire in front of state institutions in the midst of an economic crisis.
Tunisia, which until recently was characterized as the only democratic “success story” of the Arab Spring, has been plunged into a political and economic crisis.
