Iran: EU approves new sanctions

The foreign ministers of its member countries The European Union they are expected to formally approve today in Brussels the imposition of new sanctions on Iran and the creation of a new EU observer mission in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

European diplomats confirmed to the German Agency that almost 40 individuals and legal entities in Iran will be sanctioned due to gross human rights violations.

The authorities in Tehran have cracked down hard on the mass demonstrations since mid-September, proceeding especially in the last period with at least four hangings of demonstrators, while at least 109 are still at risk of execution, according to NGOs.

The decision on the new sanctions is expected to be formalized as member states debate whether to include the Revolutionary Guards on the European list of terrorist organizations, which raises legal challenges.

The EU has already adopted three sets of sanctions on Iran for human rights abuses, targeting 146 individuals and 12 legal entities, including officers of the Islamic Republic’s elite armed forces, the Revolutionary Guards.

The trigger for the mass mobilizations was the death of a young Iranian of Kurdish origin. THE Mahsa Amini22, died on September 16, three days after she was arrested in Tehran by morality police, who accused her of not fully covering her hair in violation of the Islamic Republic’s ultra-strict law on women’s dress code.

According to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group, at least 481 people have been killed since the protest movement took place.

Also, the 27 foreign ministers will discuss the war in Ukraine and consider the prospect of sending additional military aid to Kyiv, worth 500 million euros.

The council’s agenda also includes security in the Sahel region, its approach EU against Venezuela and the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
