Extensive power outages in Pakistan

Pakistan faced widespread power outages across the country early this morning due to serious malfunction in the national gridannounced the federal Ministry of Energy.

“According to the first information, at around 07:34 (local time; 04:34 Greek time), the national network suffered a loss of frequency, which caused serious damage. Work is underway to restore the system,” the ministry said in a press release.

Power was cut in virtually all major cities, including Karachi, the capital Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar.

Frequency fluctuation was recorded in the southern part of the country, between the cities of Jamsoro and Dadu, when the systems were activated in the morning, Energy Minister Khurram Dastagir told Geo TV.

“There was voltage fluctuation and the systems went out one by one. This is not a major crisis,” assured Mr. Dastagir.

The operation of some local networks has already been restored, the minister added.
