Statistical estimate: 1.7 million coronavirus carriers in the UK – 1 in 20 Londoners

London, Thanasis Gavos

An estimated 1.7 million coronavirus carriers arrived in the UK last Sunday, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics based on tens of thousands of regular sampling checks.

According to the researchers, in England there was one body per 35 inhabitants (in the community, ie outside health facilities), in Wales one in 45, in Northern Ireland one in 40 and in Scotland one in 65.

This is the worst epidemiological data on the number of carriers since the beginning of the pandemic.

The worst picture is in London, where one in 20 people is believed to have contracted the virus on the 19th of the month. According to the researchers, the impressive spread of the virus in the British capital is a result of the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant, which has made the city the epicenter of the outbreak.

There are 2,097 Covid patients in the capital, a number that has increased by 44% in one week. Although the increase in hospitalizations is worrying, it is noted that at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic on January 18, there were 7,917 Covid carriers in London hospitals.

According to reports, the criterion for imposing further measures will be the number of admissions due to Covid in the hospitals of the capital. If in the following days they do not exceed 400 per day, then strict restrictions could be avoided in view of the New Year. The latest data for the beginning of the week showed 301 imports in one day.

The head of the UK Health and Safety Service, Dr. Jenny Harris, commented that we have not seen such levels of coronavirus spread since the beginning of the pandemic.

Referring to her service study which shows that Omicron has a 50-70% lower chance of hospitalization than Delta, she said it is a “ray of Christmas hope”. He was quick to point out, however, that the figures are based on Omicron players who are mostly under the age of 40 and therefore less likely to become seriously ill anyway. He added that Omicron is now spreading to older people at the risk of more hospitalizations.
