The unpleasant truth is that women and children are at risk of dying in Afghanistan, UN Under-Secretary-General Amina Mohammed

THE Deputy General Secretary United Nations chief Amina Mohammed warned European Union member states on Tuesday against halting humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, despite the fact that the de facto government of the fundamentalist Sunni Taliban is cracking down on women’s rights.

Governments need to explain to taxpayers why they should continue to give aid to a country where it is done to such an extent discrimination against womenMrs. Mohamed told reporters in Brussels.

The sad truth is that women and children are at risk of dying in Afghanistan if aid is not sent, he insisted.

Referring to the needs of the population, Mrs. Mohamed underlined that part of the population he doesn’t even have enough food while in recent weeks the Southeast Asian country has been hit by a polar cold wave with dozens of deaths.

The purpose of the international community should be to pressure the Taliban to take back decisions that trespass women’s rights or at least make more exceptions, especially in terms of employment and education, she continued.

AFGHANISTAN

After the Taliban retook power in August 2021, Afghanistan became the only country in the world that does not allow girls and women to be educated. The Taliban justified the decision by claiming that girls and young women do not abide by the strict rules, particularly the dress code they have imposed under their extreme version of Islamic law. They recently banned women from working in organizations and aid agencies.

EU member states are currently considering whether to continue providing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Burbock, especially spoke yesterday Monday, at the meeting with her counterparts in Brussels, in favor of keeping a hard line.
