According to the Ministry of Defense of the Islamic Republic, the attack was unsuccessful, as the country’s air defenses worked.
Heavy explosions heard Saturday night into Sunday at an Iranian military facility in the city of Isfahan (central) were due to an attack by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Defense announced, according to state media.
One of the UAVs was “shot down” by anti-aircraft defenses and two others were “trapped and blown up,” according to a Defense Ministry statement carried by the state-run IRNA news agency. “Fortunately, the unsuccessful attack resulted in no loss of life and caused only minor damage to the roof” of the military factory, according to the same source.
According to information broadcast earlier by the state television network IRIB, the factory mainly produces ammunition.
According to Mohammad Reza Janesar, Isfahan’s deputy governor in charge of security, who spoke to IRIB, Iranian authorities were investigating “the causes” of the explosions.
No information has been released as to who the drones belonged to at this stage.
In recent years, explosions and fires have been reported at several industrial, military and nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic amid escalation with the US and Israel.
Israel has repeatedly threatened to strike Iran, its sworn enemy.
