The chairman of the ruling Conservative Party in Britain Nadeem Zahawi he was removed from his post in the morning by the decision of the prime minister Rishi Sunakdue to his controversial tax affairs.

Mr Zahawi had settled with the tax authorities by paying what is rumored to be close to £5 million in unpaid taxes and fines. The settlement was made while Mr Zahawi was finance minister (having succeeded Mr Sunak in July 2022) and despite his repeated assurances that his tax affairs were in order.

As he announced after the fine was revealed, the amount he was ordered to pay was for “negligence” and not willful tax avoidance, and arose from his management of shares in polling firm YouGov, which he co-founded.

Prime Minister Sunack had commissioned an investigation into the case by Downing Street’s new independent ethics adviser Sir Lori Magnus. He, in a letter made public on Sunday morning, informed Mr. Sunak that, in his opinion, Nadim Zahawi “showed insufficient respect for the general principles of the Ministerial Code” and has not met the obligation to be “an honest, open and exemplary leader” .

In the letter in which Rishi Sunak announces to Mr. Zahawi his removal from the positions of head of the party apparatus and minister without portfolio, the prime minister points out that the Magnus finding shows that “it is clear that there has been a serious violation of the Ministerial Code ».

In the letter, however, Mr. Sunak adds that Mr. Zahawi should be proud of his contribution from various government posts in the last five years, especially as the deputy minister responsible for the vaccination program against the coronavirus.

The opposition was pressuring the prime minister to dismiss Mr. Zahawi.
