Mônica Bergamo: Chomsky and Corbyn warn of Bolsonaro’s use of PF to chase opponents

by

A letter signed by Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of the British Labor Party, Ken Livingstone, former mayor of London, and by the Americans Noam Chomsky, linguist and philosopher, Oliver Stone, filmmaker, Alfred de Zayas, former independent specialist of the UN for Democracy, Ilhan Omar, Democratic congressman, and Mark Weisbrot, from the center of economic policy studies in Washington, warn of the possible use of the Federal Police to persecute opponents of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government.

PEN

The text was organized by federal deputy David Miranda (PSOL-RJ). According to him, the idea was to ask foreign politicians and intellectuals, “friends of Brazil and defenders of political freedom”, to redouble their vigilance over Bolsonaro, so that the president does not use his position to curb the opposition, as he claims to have occurred in 2018 with the arrest of Lula.

BULLYING

In the letter, Miranda reports the recent operation of the PF against the presidential candidate Ciro Gomes (PDT-CE), on the last 15th, for alleged irregularities in public works between 2010 and 2013, when he was no longer a deputy.

“Brazil’s friends around the world need to speak out about the brazen use of the PF for political intimidation in the country,” he writes.

Ciro told the column that he was absolutely sure that the PF’s operation was “an order from Bolsonaro, such was the violence and arbitrariness”.

INTIMIDATION 2

“The Federal Police, controlled by Bolsonaro and with factions loyal to Sergio Moro, the corrupt judge who arrested Lula and will run for president, will be used to intimidate the president’s opponents,” he continues.

Lula was convicted by Moro in two criminal actions, for corruption and money laundering, and was imprisoned for 580 days. In June of this year, the Federal Supreme Court annulled the sentence because it considered that the then judge Sergio Moro was partial in conducting the case against the former president.

FORGET

Miranda says the idea is to show “that the international community is looking to respect democratic rules in 2022 and not repeat what they did to the opposition in 2018”.

RITA HURRICANE
