Updated security warning in areas frequented by Westerners, particularly Istanbul’s Beyoglu, Galata, Taksim and Istiklal districts
The US embassy in Turkey warned Americans today of possible attacks on churches, synagogues and diplomatic missions in Istanbul, the second such warning issued in four days, following the Koran burning incidents in Europe.
In an updated security warning, the US embassy said “possible imminent terrorist retaliatory attacks” could take place in areas frequented by Westerners, particularly the Istanbul districts of Beyoglu, Galata, Taksim and Istiklal.
Turkish authorities are investigating, the warning added.
On Friday, embassies in Ankara, including those of the US, Germany, France and Italy, issued security warnings about possible retaliatory attacks against places of worship, following separate incidents in Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark against which the Koran burned.
On Saturday, Turkey also warned its citizens of “possible Islamophobic, xenophobic and racist attacks” in the United States and Europe.
