Lula says he is not interested in sending ammunition to Ukraine and proposes a peace forum

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) defended, this Monday (30), the creation of a group of countries to negotiate an end to the War in Ukraine.

The petista also said that Brazil is not interested in sending ammunition to Ukraine because it does not want to have any participation in the conflict, even if indirect. Lula’s position was anticipated by the Sheetwhich revealed that the Brazilian leader vetoed the sending of tank ammunition to Germany, which would be the intermediary, so as not to provoke Russia and not to undermine its position of neutrality.

For Lula, international efforts so far have been fruitless to end the war, whose origins are not clear to the PT party — he mentioned Ukraine’s possible entry into the European Union and NATO and Moscow’s territorial ambitions as causes.

The statement comes after the president’s meeting with the prime minister of Germany, Olaf Scholz, at the Planalto Palace.

“We have to create another body, in the same way we created the G20 when the 2008 crisis occurred, to try to solve the problem of the crisis”, said Lula in a press conference. “We try to create an ecological club, and we create a club for people who want to build peace on the planet.”

The PT also said that Brazil will not sell ammunition to Ukraine, as requested by Germany. As he showed Sheet, the decision took place on the 20th, at the PT’s meeting with the heads of the Armed Forces and the Minister of Defense, José Múcio. It was the eve of the resignation of the commander of the Army, Júlio Cesar de Arruda.

“Brazil is not interested in passing on ammunition so that they can be used in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Brazil is a country of peace, our last dispute was the war in Paraguay. And, therefore, Brazil does not want to have any participation, even if indirect”, he said.

Lula met, alone, with the German for approximately 1h30. Afterwards, an extended meeting took place, lasting about an hour, with the presence of ministers Mauro Vieira (Itamaraty), Marina Silva (Environment and Climate Change), Luciana Santos (Science and Technology), Alexandre Silveira (Mines and Energy ) and vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (Development, Industry, Commerce and Services). Former foreign minister Celso Amorim, head of the president’s special advisory service, was also present.
