Seven Greek researchers – of which two are active in Greece and five in other countries – will receive a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).

In total, as announced by the ERC, 321 researchers were selected for the specific grants of 2022 and will be strengthened with 657 million euros in the framework of the program EU’s “Horizon Europe”.. Consolidation grants are for distinguished researchers with seven to 12 years of post-PhD experience.

A total of 2,222 proposals for funding had been submitted. The 321 selected are expected to lead to the creation of approximately 2,000 new scientific employment positions for postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students and other collaborators.

ERC President German Professor Maria Leptin said that “Consolidator Grants support researchers at a critical moment in their careers, enhancing their independence, strengthening their research teams and helping them establish themselves as leaders in their field. And the support above all gives them the opportunity to pursue their scientific dreams.”

The grants cover a wide range of scientific and technological fields and concern research projects to be carried out in universities and research centers of 18 EU member countries and other countries. The countries with the most selected researchers are Germany (62), France (41) and Spain (24). In terms of nationalities, the Germans prevail (52 researchers), followed by the Italians (32), the French (31) and the British (31).

From the Greek side, the following were selected: Nikolaos Bekiaris-Lymberis (Crete Polytechnic), Maria Tsoumakidou (Alexander Flemig Research Center for Biomedical Sciences of Greece), Eleni Tomazou (St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute Kinderkrebsforschung GmbH – Austria), Kostas Pantzas (National Center of Scientific Research CNRS – France), Ioannis Stefanou (Ecole Centrale de Nantes – France), Aristea Koukiadaki (University of Manchester – UK) and Milka Sarri (University of Cambridge – UK).

The ERC was founded in 2007 and offers four main categories of grants to promising researchers: Starting Grants, Consolidator, Advanced and Synergy. The ERC’s budget for the period 2021-2027 amounts to over 16 billion euros under the Horizon Europe programme.
