Ukraine’s border guard prevented more than 13,000 men from leaving the territory after Russia’s armed forces invaded on February 24, 2022, according to its statistics.

“More than 9,100 people have been arrested at the green border since February 24,” border guard spokesman Andriy Demchenko said during a press conference Tuesday in Kyiv. The term he used (“green border”) refers to areas of the border that were not particularly strictly guarded. Most were detained at Ukraine’s borders with Romania and Moldova.

Another approximately 3,900 people were prevented from crossing the border through checkpoints by showing fake or falsified documents. Most were trying to reach Hungary or Poland.

As part of general conscription when the war broke out, Ukrainians between the ages of 18 and 60 who were called up to join the armed forces were barred from leaving the country, with few exceptions.

According to authorities in Kyiv, some tried to leave the country disguised as women, with bought or forged documents for children they didn’t have or marriages that never took place.

Several men died from exposure to the cold in the Carpathians, and more than ten drowned in rivers in border areas, mostly on the border with Romania, according to figures from the Ukrainian border guard.

It was not announced how many Ukrainians were able to leave the country to avoid conscription.
