US diplomacy on Wednesday denounced the extension of the state of emergency imposed on Myanmar by the military junta, which could mean the postponement of upcoming elections, despite the generals’ declared intention to hold them.
“The United States strongly opposes the decision by the Burmese military regime to extend the state of emergency, which means prolonging the illegal martial law and the suffering it causes in that country,” said a State Department press release released yesterday and signed by representative of Ned Price.
The state of emergency remains in place since a military coup two years ago, when generals overthrew on February 1, 2021 the government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, in prison today.
The US will continue to work in coordination with its allies to “deny” the military junta any chance of gaining “international solvency”, added the text signed by Mr Price.
The representative of the US State Department also denounces the “so-called elections, which will increase violence and instability and will not be representative of the people”.
Washington also announced targeted sanctions against Myanmar’s energy sector to increase pressure on the military regime.
