She was accused of expressing anti-Semitic views years ago – “I’m Muslim, I’m an immigrant and, by chance, I’m from Africa,” she said in her speech
THE House of Representatives today adopted a resolution by which the removal of Democratic MP Ilhan Omar is requested from the powerful Foreign Affairs Committee after Republicans accused her of years ago expressed anti-Semitic views. The Democrats, for their part, believe that this decision was made in retaliation for ousting Republican members from other committees in the recent past.
Ilhan Omar she is the third Democrat to be ousted by a parliamentary committee this year. The former refugee from Somalia is said to have made several comments critical of Israel after 2012 – statements condemned by both parties.
“I’m Muslim, I’m an immigrant and, by chance, I’m from Africa”she said in her speech before the vote, wondering “if anyone is surprised” that she was targeted.
Removing some Democrats from congressional committees was a promise made by Kevin McCarthy in his campaign to become the new speaker of the House of Representatives. According to McCarthy, it was the Democrats who, when they controlled the House, set new “rules” after ousting controversial Republicans Marjorie Taylor Green and Paul Gosar from certain committees. They were accused of inciting their supporters to acts of violence against their political opponents.
Ilhan Omar, one of two Muslim women in Congress, he apologized in 2019 when he implied that Republicans support Israel because they receive donations from a pro-Israel lobby. Five years earlier, before he was elected to Congress, had declared that Israel had ‘put the world to sleep’ and demanded that everyone open their eyes and see the “atrocities” committed by this US ally.
The head of the House Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries, said that appropriate disciplinary measures had already been taken for Ilhan Omar’s statements and that today’s expulsion was for reasons of “political revenge”.
