Brazil: Former president Bolsonaro encouraged coup attempt, says president Lula

“Today, I say it consciously, loud and clear: this citizen (including the former president) prepared a coup,” said Lula during an interview he gave to the Brazilian television network RedeTV! yesterday

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Thursday he was “certain” that his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro masterminded the attack on the seats of the national delegation, the top judiciary and the presidency on January 8, and that his aim was to impose ” coup”.

“Today, I say it consciously, loud and clear: this citizen (including the former president) prepared a coup,” said Lula during an interview he gave to the Brazilian television network RedeTV! yesterday.

On January 8, thousands of Mr. Bolsonaro’s supporters, enraged after the victory of the center-left Lula over his far-right rival in the October 2022 presidential election, violently stormed, vandalized and destroyed the presidential palace, congressional headquarters and of the Supreme Court, buildings located a short distance from each other.

A Brazilian judge has decided to include the former head of state, who left the country for Florida at the end of December, in the investigation being carried out to find out who was behind the destruction of the institutions.

“I’m sure Bolsonaro was actively involved in all of this, he even wanted to be involved,” Lula said when asked about his predecessor’s possible role in the incidents.

“They wanted to cause chaos on January 1, but they realized they couldn’t because there were too many police and too many people on the streets,” Lula added.

His comments came on the same day as senator Marcus du Val, who revealed he had attended a meeting with the former president in which the topic of discussion was how to prevent Lula from taking power.

Bolsonaro has applied to have his visa extended for six months to stay in the US, according to his lawyers. He has repeatedly denied having anything to do with the events of January 8.

The 77-year-old Lula narrowly won the second round of the presidential election (50.9% to 49.1%).

“We defeated Bolsonaro, but we still have to defeat Bolsonaro,” the current president said in his interview.
