In the last week alone there were reports of the death of 500 Russians fighting in Ukraine

The BBC based on open sources managed to identify the names of more than 13,000 Russian soldiers killed in the war in Ukraine. They include 924 conscripts.

Since the first day of the war, the Russian service of the BBC in collaboration with the website Mediazona (which in Russia is considered a ‘foreign agent’) and a group of volunteers, has been compiling a list of names of Russians killed in Ukraine. As of today, February 3, the details of 13,030 soldiers and officers have been identified.

In the last week alone there were reports of the death of 500 Russians fighting in Ukraine. Most of the dead in the last three months are conscripts, volunteers and prisoners.

We only rely on confirmed information about the dead and therefore the figures we have collected do not correspond to the true level of casualties, the BBC writes and adds: we assume that our list may include at least twice as many names of the dead as those who have he is actually buried in Russia.

We came to this conclusion – writes the BBC – by studying the situation in cemeteries in more than 60 populated areas throughout 2022. Therefore, based on the most conservative estimates, during the invasion of Ukraine Russia could have 26,000 dead. .

Total Russian casualties (ie those put out of action due to injury, death, or missing) may reach at least 117,000.

This number was reached based on observations by the US Naval Research Laboratory, according to which for every dead Russian killed in Ukraine there are three and a half wounded. This number does not include those who fight on the side of Russia and belong to the “people’s police” of Donetsk and Lugansk.

From open sources, the death of 924 Russian soldiers was identified. This number also includes those killed in Makiivka (near Donetsk) on January 1. The names of 101 soldiers killed in Makiivka by a Ukrainian missile have been identified, of which 99 were conscripts. The families of 18 more soldiers cannot find them either among the dead or among the survivors.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has officially announced the death of 89 soldiers in Makiivka (the reference that they were conscripts was in the first announcement, but was later removed).

The funerals of those killed in Makiifka continue in the Samara region almost daily and for this reason the number identified is not the final one. British intelligence claims that up to 300 Russian soldiers could have been killed at Makeyevka (Makeyevka, in Russian).

Of the 13,030 identified Russians killed in Ukraine, 1,665, or nearly 15%, were officers. Among them were four generals and 54 colonels.

The total number of Russians killed increases significantly if those who fought against Ukraine and belonged to the “people’s police” of Donetsk and Lugansk are added to the list.

From December 22, 2022, the authorities of the self-proclaimed “People’s Democracies” stopped publishing data on the losses of their own military. According to figures obtained from open sources, at least 4,700 soldiers from the “Donetsk People’s Republic” and more than 1,350 from the “Lugansk People’s Republic” have been killed.

At the same time, the BBC recorded on social media more than 4,500 ads and posts of people looking for male relatives, who were found on the lines of the “people’s police”, who for a long time did not respond to the calls made to them. Some of them, whom they were looking for in the first months of the war, returned with the so-called “load-200” with which the dead are characterized.

Even if only the confirmed figures are taken, the total losses of those fighting on the side of Russia may exceed 38,000 dead.

If the wounded are added, the total losses of the pro-Russian forces in the 10 months of the war may exceed 171,000 people.

According to US intelligence estimates, if the dead and wounded are included, Russia’s total losses in Ukraine have exceeded 188,000.
