The White House said President Joe Biden agreed to postpone the trip.

The head of US diplomacy, Anthony Blinken, spoke by phone with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi today, to convey to him his decision to postpone his trip to China, on the occasion of the spy balloon that was spotted flying in US airspace.

The US secretary of state “noted the regret expressed by China but said it was an irresponsible action and a clear violation of US sovereignty that undermines the objectives of his trip,” a State Department spokesman said.

In the phone conversation between the two ministers, Blinken also explained to Wang Yi that because of this incident, “it is not considered appropriate for him to go to Beijing at this time.” But he insisted that the US wants to “keep channels of communication open” and that his visit could take place “when circumstances permit”.

Earlier today, a US official announced that Blinken’s visit to China was being postponed.

The White House said President Joe Biden agreed to postpone the trip.

Beijing expressed its regret for this “unintentional” entry of the balloon into US airspace, claiming that it is an “aircraft used for research purposes, mainly meteorological”.
