Jordanian lawmakers were caught red-handed today, disrupting a session of parliament to discuss the issue of gender equality in a constitutional review, according to state television.
The government wants to revise the Constitution and, above all, to include the reference to “Jordanians” in Chapter II, entitled “Rights and Duties of Jordanians”, which deals with the equal rights of citizens.
Many lawmakers opposed the revision, calling it “unnecessary,” according to al-Mamlaka TV, which rebroadcast the meeting.
“It is a shame (+ eib +) for us to add the word Jordan,” said one of the lawmakers, Raed Smeirat, using a very negative Arabic term.
The remarks angered Parliament Speaker Abdelkarim al-Dagmi, who demanded that Semirat apologize.
Another lawmaker, Suleiman Abu Yahya, asked Dagmi to adjourn the meeting, but he refused, prompting Yahya to reply, “You do not understand anything!”
The speaker of parliament asked him to leave the room and as he was leaving the plenary, clashes broke out between MPs, according to the images that were broadcast online.
The meeting was adjourned and adjourned for tomorrow.
