US Navy divers are trying to recover the wreckage of the Chinese “spy” balloon that was shot down yesterday by US forces off the coast of South Carolina.

A former top US military officer said this would happen relatively quickly so experts could start analyzing his equipment as soon as possible, according to CNN.

Debris from the balloon spread over a large area and the US said the balloon was monitoring sensitive military sites.

According to Admiral Mike Mullen, former chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, it is possible that the Chinese military launched the balloon on purpose to disrupt Anthony Blinken’s trip to China.

Republican politicians accused US President Joe Biden of dereliction of duty for allowing the balloon to cross the country unimpeded.

Marco Rubio, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CNN it was a “hilarious attempt” by China to embarrass the president ahead of his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

The Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, accused the Biden administration of failing to recognize the “urgency” of the situation, adding: “Clearly this was an effort by China to gather intelligence, defeat the command and control of sensitive missile defense and nuclear weapons facilities’.

In a written statement, the Chinese government said it would “resolutely safeguard” the rights and interests of the company operating the hot air balloon and that it reserved the right “to respond further if necessary.”
