Almost 1,500 people have left their homes to escape the flames – At least 26 injured in serious condition

Firefighters in Chile are battling flames to bring under control one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country in years, as the death toll from the wildfires has reached 24 and at least 1,000 injured.

At Chile Aid is expected to arrive today from the US, Spain and Latin American countries, including planes and teams of special forest firefighters.

President Gabriel Boric’s government has declared a state of emergency in the southern provinces of Bio-Bio, Niublé and Araucania, rural and forested areas along the Pacific coast.

About 2,700,000 acres have been reduced to ashes from the fires. The heat wave affecting the southern hemisphere is complicating the efforts to extinguish the fires as in some areas the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. A total of 260 fires remain active today and of these 28 are considered particularly dangerous.

Almost 1,500 people have left their homes to escape the flames. Of the injured, at least 26 are hospitalized in serious condition.

Authorities announced on Saturday that aid was expected soon from several countries, including the US, Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela. A team of experts from Spain was on its way to Chile today.
