China: Sends $4.4 million in emergency aid to earthquake-hit Syria

China has already pledged to send a first tranche of 40 million yuan in emergency aid to Turkey

China will provide 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) of emergency humanitarian aid to earthquake-stricken Syria, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said today at a regular press briefing.

The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 9,600.

Mao said $2 million of the emergency aid would be used for liquidity and needed supplies, adding that China would speed up existing food aid programs.

China has already pledged to send a first tranche of 40 million yuan in emergency aid to Turkey.

The earthquake rescue team sent by China arrived at the airport in Adana, Turkey early today, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The 82-member team was carrying 20 tons of medical and other essential supplies and equipment, as well as four rescue dogs, CCTV added.

The team will work with local authorities, the Chinese embassy in Turkey, the United Nations and other agencies for operations such as rescue and medical assistance, the network said.

In addition, volunteer rescue teams, with at least 52 people, from provinces such as Guangdong, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Zhejiang are heading to the affected areas of Turkey, according to CCTV.
