After almost a year of speaking on big screens, Volodymir Zelensky now seems to be betting on good old-fashioned face-to-face diplomacy in his attempt to secure more shipments of arms from allies at a critical moment in the war.

Ukraine’s president traveled to London this Wednesday (8), in his second public visit abroad since Russia invaded the nation under his command, on February 24 – the first, to Washington, took place at the end of the year. past, and ended with the announcement of the deployment of the Patriot anti-aircraft defense system, which for analysts could change the course of the war in Eastern Europe.

His agenda in the British capital included a meeting with the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, a speech to the English Parliament, and a visit to Ukrainian troops who are now training in the United Kingdom to fly NATO fighter jets, in an unprecedented partnership with the British Army.

In a statement, Sunak said Zelensky’s trip was “a testament to his courage, determination and struggle, as well as evidence of the unshakable friendship between our countries” — the UK has been one of Kiev’s biggest allies in Europe since the war broke out.

The leader still meets with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

On Thursday (9), Zelenski visits Brussels for a summit with European Union leaders. Earlier this month, authorities from the bloc went to the Ukrainian capital to discuss increased shipments of arms and money and covering the country’s energy needs, whose infrastructure has been the target of Russian bombing in recent months.
