“Don’t be afraid, we will not leave you on the streets” said the Turkish president to the earthquake victims and announced financial aid of 531 dollars to each affected family

The Turkish president visited the areas affected by the 7.8 Richter magnitude in Kahramanmaras province today, 4 days after the two deadly earthquakes, from where he announced that the death toll had risen to 8,574.

Speaking to reporters with ambulance sirens blaring, Tayyip Erdogan said there were initially some problems with the authorities’ response, but business has returned to normal now.

“On the first day we faced some issues but after the second day and today the situation came under control,” he said.

As thousands of people complained about the lack of media and the slow reaction of the authorities, the Turkish president stressed that citizens should only listen to information from the authorities and ignore “provocateurs”.

“The government aims to build houses within a year for those who were left homeless in the ten affected provinces,” the president announced.

“Don’t be afraid, we won’t let you stay on the streets,” said Erdogan.

The Turkish president also announced that “initially” each affected family will receive $531 in financial aid.

The most devastating earthquake in decades caused damage to hospitals, airports and roads and the collapse of more than 6,400 buildings.

As he said, there were problems on the roads and at the airports, but from now on the situation will improve every day.

“We had some problems at the airports and on the roads, but today is better. Tomorrow and then will be better. We are still facing some fuel issues … but we will overcome those too,” Erdogan concluded after visiting camps set up by AFAD, Turkey’s disaster relief agency.
