The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the warning for 23 districts of Tokyo – transportation “failed”

Warning for heavy snowfall was issued for central Tokyo today by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the bad weather is causing disruption to traffic and transportation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the warning for the 23 Tokyo Wards, noting that later today the snow could turn to sleet and then rain, making driving conditions potentially hazardous during the evening rush hour if the water freezes on the roads.

Due to the snowfall, Japanese Airlines cancel a total of 57 flights scheduled for today to and from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, while All Nippon Airways also canceled a number of its domestic flights.

In the meantime, the railway company East Japan Railway announced that from tonight will be suspended all Yamagata Shinkansen high-speed train routes. Other train services in eastern Japan may experience delays or even cancellations, according to reports.

According to the weather service, the cold air front combined with the low barometric pressure caused the snowfall since this morning in the Kanto-Koshin region in eastern and central Japan, while 23 wards in Tokyo are also affected.

THE warning for snowfall may extend to a wider part of the eastern regions of the country if the instability of barometric systems continues for longer than expected or ground temperatures fall further resulting in snow accumulation.

By 6 a.m. local time on Saturday, 5 centimeters of snow could fall in central Tokyo, while nearby higher-elevation areas could see up to 40 centimeters of snow, weather service officials said.
