Amsterdam will soon ban cannabis from its famous red-light district under new city regulations. The new laws, which were announced yesterday, will come into effect from mid-May and are aimed at improving the quality of life for residents, who have long complained about the disruption caused by tourists, the BBC reports.

The city council announced that under the new laws, restaurants and bars would have to close by 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, the old town quarter would close to new visitors after 1am and that workers in this “special” sector – sex – should close their premises at 3 in the morning.

“The atmosphere gets terrible, especially at night,” a city spokesman said. “Many people are under the influence of drugs and alcohol and stay for a long time, causing residents to be disturbed and lose sleep.”

The sale of alcohol is already banned from Thursday to Sunday after 4pm in shops, wineries and cafes in the famous area. Under the new laws, vendors will also have to completely remove alcoholic beverages from their windows during this period.

Amsterdam is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors each year, many of whom travel to the city for its cannabis-infused cafes. These cafes sell cannabis under strict conditions. If that doesn’t work, the city council said it would also consider banning smoking outside of cafes.
