Magnitude 7.8 Richter 500km Rift in Earth’s Surface (Video)

The rift, scientifically known as ‘slide strike’, is moving the Arabian plate northwards and pushing the Anatolian plate westwards

A huge fault, 500 kilometers long, has been created along the ground in the earthquake-stricken areas of Turkey by the deadly 7.8 Richter.

The earthquake had its epicenter about 26 kilometers east of the Turkish city of Nurdagi at a depth of about 18 kilometers on the Anatolia fault.

The rift, which is scientifically termed “slope strike,” moves the Arabian plate to the north and pushes the Anatolian plate to the west.

Turkish network Haber Turk broadcast video of the rupture.

The type of fault, which is horizontal sliding and shows movement of the order of 5 meters in the area, creates peculiar damage to the buildings, corresponding to those observed in the İzmit earthquake in 1999, Mr. Lekkas commented.

The length and size of the fault was similar to the 1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco,” said a geophysicist at NASA’s Gas Propulsion Laboratory.
