Syria – White Helmets: “Hundreds of lives lost, because international aid was delayed”

by

“We no longer hear voices under the ruins, so it’s too late now,” said an official of the White Helmets organization

A member of the Syrian civil defense organization the White Helmets – which operates in rebel-held areas of the country – said the lack of international aid had resulted in hundreds of lives are lost that could have been saved.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Ammar al Salmo, who volunteers in the rebel-held part of Aleppo province, says it is now “too late” to save anyone trapped under the rubble.

“We no longer hear voices under the ruins, so it’s too late now.”

He pointed out that the situation would have been different if they had received specialized rescue equipment in the first three days.

“We are left to deal with this disaster as if we were in the dark ages”he said, adding that at least one volunteer lost his fingernails trying to search for survivors in the rubble.

He added that five days after the disaster, the situation is “very ugly, and we need everything right now,” and appealed to the UN to do more.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for Syria, El-Mostafa Benlamlih, he answered that the criticism aimed at the UN was unfair, pointing to the fact that Syria “it’s not a normal country where you have all the means you need.” Has one “complex geographical situation and complex security situation”, clarified.

THE Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad announced Friday that it is accepting international humanitarian aid to be sent to areas controlled by anti-regime rebels in northwest Syria, which has suffered major damage from deadly earthquakes.

In the announcement, broadcast by the official Sana news agency, the government specifies that the distribution of humanitarian aid will take place “under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent”, with the help of the UN. This will ensure that aid reaches “those who need it”.
