Biden ordered it shot down – The announcement from the National Security Council spokesman comes just a week after the downing of a Chinese spy balloon
The Pentagon announced Friday that shot down an unidentified flying object over Alaska, just a week after a Chinese spy balloon was shot down.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed Friday that an unidentified object was flying over Alaska airspace and President Joe Biden ordered it shot down.
“The object was flying at 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of commercial flights,” he said.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed Friday that an object was flying over Alaska airspace and President Joe Biden ordered it shot down.
“So I can confirm that the Department of Defense has been tracking a high-altitude object over Alaskan airspace for the past 24 hours,” he said at Friday’s briefing. “The object was flying at 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to safety.”
Kirby clarified that “At the Pentagon’s recommendation, President Biden ordered the military to shoot the object down and they did, and it fell into territorial waters.”
Fighter aircraft of the US belonging to the Northern Command shot down the object, “an hour ago”.
Kirby made it clear that the US does not know who owns the object, “and would not call it a balloon,” like the one allegedly owned by the Chinese government that was shot down last week.
“We’re calling it an ‘object’ because that’s the best description we have right now,” Kirby said. “We don’t know who owns it, whether it’s state or private. We just don’t know,” he admitted.
The US expects to recover the pieces because they appear to have fallen into the water. “There will be a recovery attempt, and hopefully it will be successful, and then we can learn a little bit more about it,” the US official said. The item was described as “about the size of a small car.”
