The Andean country is facing its worst forest fires in years, which have killed 24 people and burned more than 3.4 million hectares.
At the same time, 1,205 houses have burned and 5,570 people have been left homeless, according to the latest official count.
“I transported people from the other side of the river. I was desperate. My parents were fighting the fire and I was afraid that the flames would reach our house,” said 13-year-old Lucas.
“There was no one else who could do it, so the only hope was me“, explained.
Although the family’s home is now out of danger, the little boatman is still ferrying firefighters from one bank of the river to the other, as he wants to help with the firefighting operation.
