Many people were rescued almost a week after the deadly earthquake

Rescuers in Turkey pulled more survivors from the rubble, a week after the deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 33,000 people in Turkey and Syria, according to a provisional count, with the UN expects this number to even double.

However, desperate rescues continue long after the critical 72-hour post-earthquake period.

Early this morning, Anadolu Agency reported that a 7-year-old boy, Mustafa, was rescued in Hatay province, while 62-year-old Nafize Yilmaz was pulled alive from the rubble in Nurdagi city, in the same province. Both had been trapped for 163 hours before being rescued yesterday, Sunday.

Sibel Kaya, 40, was pulled from the rubble of a five-story building in Gaziantep province 170 hours after the earthquake.

60-year-old Erengul Oder remained under the debris for 166 hours in Antiyaman province, while 45-year-old Cengiz Polat was pulled from the rubble after 162 hours. Polat told rescuers he was banging on a stove next to him to make noise so they could hear him.

In the same province, rescue crews managed to free after 158 hours 10-year-old Asima Baltatsi, who as soon as he came out asked the rescuers for fruit-flavored jellies.

In addition, the rescue crews in Kahramanmaras are in contact with three survivors, who are believed to be a mother, her daughter and a baby.
